Lousy Labeling Limits Lives

How we decide to identify others, what labels we attach to them, can either help them or destroy them. The Bible warns us not to judge others or we will be judged by our own less-than-generous labeling. It's a powerful warning that should be heeded.

It works this way. If a group of people label someone a loser, that group of people have begun a label-fulfilling prophecy. If a group (the group can be just one person too) decides an individual can't succeed, that group will make NO ATTEMPT to help that person when he/she is struggling. They've already decreed that person a failure, so why both.

See how corrosive this is? See what evil this can bring about.

If instead, the same group labels someone a success, that group will go out of their way to help that person along. It is a nasty cycle.

It is all too easy to fall into it. I almost did so just now, beginning a rant about politics that would have included labels galore. But I won't. I'll go back to the biblical warning: As you judge, so you shall be judged. The measure you give will be the measure you receive. I'm going to work hard to avoid labeling others, and myself, negatively, giving folks the benefit of the doubt and helping them along their way whenever I can. It's not an easy job, but it's a far better one than passing caustic judgment and sitting back to try to make it come true. No thank you. I don't want to be judged as such an ungenerous soul.

Wishing you a negative label free day.
